Welcome to the Introduction to GIS Course. The first readings (I have the first chapter of required text online) and is postedin calendar below. Material through thecourse will be released at given times.

4 things I need for you to do now...

  1. To perform the lessons in the course you must install software or have access to a PC computer with ArcGIS installed. I checked the Tutorial Software and it will be sufficient for the lessons. Please do install the software from the text book.

  2. Please complete the student survey on the left column.

  3. Visit the communications link below and then select discussion link .. and select the topic "START HERE. Introduce yourself and what you do and why GIS?" and introduce yourself . . please don't be shy. We need to share with your colleagues why you are here and your expectations / learning outcomes.

  4. last, for now, select the video by Jack Dangermond (owner of ESRI)'. He'll mention 'couple of days training' but of course, disregard that ...

Frequent questions of course is on the career in GIS. The answer is, it depends. It depends on both the field, and your experience, degree and many other attributes. The easy answer is that GIS is fast growing to where we all will (and are) using it ... do you send your excel work to the excel department? Your email to be typed up in the 'email' department ? GIS is the same. You will be using GIS to some degree ... those fortunate to have GIS skills will find the tool essential & marketable.
